The theatrical world of creative duo Catherine Martin, award winning costume and set designer, and Baz Luhrmann, award winning filmmaker, is one of drama and flamboyance. Unsurprisingly, this creative aesthetic spills over into the interior decor of their Anglo-Italianate New York townhouse.
Five storeys high and 1980sqm, the family’s townhouse was built in 1852. Originally a 3-family home, the two Australian entrepreneurs transformed it into a single residence through a 3-month renovation in 2016, before moving in with their teenage children Lilian and William.
Following a similar process to that of her day job, Catherine researched the history of the home and surrounding neighbourhood thoroughly before embarking on the renovation. Presenting detailed concepts and sample boards to Baz before taking full creative control, Catherine’s love of mixing antiques and modern home décor is evident – as is her love of pattern on pattern.
Having moved to New York from Sydney whilst working on The Great Gatsby the theatrical spirit is evident throughout the home and designs from Catherine’s collaboration with Mokum are proudly represented.
