Homegrown | Woodwrights

“We aim to create enduring and timeless forms that exhibit elements of craftsmanship which can be cherished today and for generations to come”

Founded in 1997 in a little bungalow on the main street of Motueka, New Zealand, Woodwrights are a family business with a passion for quality furniture and a caring approach to customer service.

Finding inspiration in New Zealand's unique lifestyle and extraordinary environment, Woodwrights design furniture that is not only comfortable but functional and visually appealing. Additionally, they use technology to inspire possibilities for their clients, having incorporated 3D modelling and our digital textures into the evolution of their business.

What is your vision and driving passion?

Our vision is to be New Zealand’s most trusted furniture brand. We always want to make the customer journey as easy and enjoyable as possible. Every part of the process, from the moment an inquiry is made to the delivery, is carried out in-house with an undeniable attention to detail. Having control of each part of the process from design to delivery is what enables us to achieve a seamless process, consistent levels of quality and the development of new inspirational furniture pieces.

What is special about your process in considering the materials you work with?

A key part of our offering is the ability to customise your Woodwrights piece to suit your style and lifestyle, through choosing from our extensive library of materials and finishes. While we recommend materials and finishes for each piece, we like to work with the customer to ensure they get the piece they desire. Having in-house product designers allows us to adapt pieces to suit specific spaces in clients' homes.

How has embracing 3D modelling and our digital fabric textures changed the way you approach your business and brand?

Technology has played an integral part in the growth of our company and the way we have evolved. We’ve viewed it as an enabler to enhance the buying experience for customers and designers alike. Digital fabric textures have complemented our 3D furniture models and allowed us to generate a comprehensive portfolio of images that helps inspire possibilities for clients. Not only that, but it improves the work of designers, by offering relevant, quality imagery that they can use throughout their documents.

We believe that mindset plays a key part in the benefit that technology can offer – you either view it as an enabler that creates possibilities, or as a disruptor that you have to try and keep up with in some way. Technology will continue to evolve and transform the way we operate, so the sooner we can identify how it can deliver tangible value and embrace it, the more exponential the opportunities become.

Are there particular textures or fabric constructions that appeal to you?

In keeping with our aspiration to remain approachable and grounded with an appreciation for craftsmanship, we are drawn to more neutral fabrics with texture and refined details. Fabrics such as Grande Bouclé work harmoniously with the Kingsview Sofa – the size of the pile complements the scale of the form of the sofa. Pueblo is also a favourite and works really well with the Landing Sofa – the matte appearance and even weave creates an element of softness yet feels enduring. Some of the richer colour options with the likes of Pueblo and Alpine add a touch of warmth and depth which is nice.

You engage with visitors to your Auckland showroom via video from your Motueka offices, what inspired this concept?

Despite our team of experts being located at our Motueka head office, we wanted to foster connections with customers at our Auckland studio. Virtual consultations are our way of connecting, assisting, and sharing knowledge with customers from afar – while still being hands on in our office and factory.

What’s next for Woodwrights?

It is an exciting time for Woodwrights with our recent rebrand aimed at reframing our rich history, and having the next generation on board. With a clear vision, we are designing and crafting new products right here in New Zealand and are looking forward to expanding our range and relationships. With constant innovation in both technology, products, and manufacturing, it is exciting to have such a passionate and skilled team to bring our vision to life.
