Isolation Dreaming

When I was younger, if I couldn’t sleep I would always imagine redesigning our family home, I would work room by room – no nook left untouched, until I’d drifted off to sleep. It was a surprisingly meditative process I could get lost in. The past few weeks have been an unnerving time for me and my family, but as we bunker down in our home in Sydney’s Inner West, I’m taking the time to reflect on our recent bedroom renovations and to get inspired for the redecoration to come.

With all the structural work out of the way, and our daughters room complete (featuring a custom made Catherine Martin La Palma headboard as bribery for swapping rooms), I now find myself visually moodboarding our master bedroom. 

Built in 1880, the house is a weatherboard, painted black in Porters Paints Palm Beach Black referencing the iconic New Zealand bach, and has been renovated with the help of our friend William Tozer, Director of William Tozer Associates, and his London based practice. William has been a close friend of ours since University so it only felt right to work with him on creating our home. The new additions are clean and modern to counterbalance the original decorative elements in the house, complete with pressed tin walls and celling’s from the 1920s.

With the abundance of tin in the master bedroom and a bold mid-century Polish artwork, the interior selections call for simplicity. Textural layering of textiles paired with modern Australian and New Zealand hard furniture. Below is my current wishlist, although it seems to be forever changing as I spend way too much time online, falling in love with new pieces daily.

Our current Leila bed is from Jardan, I plan to recover it in Mokum Strata colour Chalk, I love the chunky dimension of this basket weave yet it’s still very tailored when upholstered, highlighting the clean lines of our contemporary bed frame.

Custom bed linen in Mokum Satori Stonewash colour Willow will add life to our white room while coordinating with our Polish artwork, White Rose by Tadeusz Dominik. Being a natural linen fibre, Satori Stonewash will offer luxurious softness with its gorgeous aged texture from the artisan stonewash finish.

New bedding calls for new scatter cushions, and I’m dreaming of textural layers of Wabi Sabi colour Whitewash, Saba colour Linen and our bestselling linen Eternal in colour Rose Quartz. Saba is an all-time favourite of mine, I love the illusion of it looking like an embroidery when in fact it is woven on a Dobby loom. Saba has been in our range for over 20 years and is milled by an artisan Belgium weaving mill, it’s a Mokum classic.

The room wouldn't be complete without a custom coloured hand knot rug from Designer Rugs and the final two additions are, of course, textiles driven. Layering textures within a space – especially the bedroom – creates comfort through a sense of cocooning.
 
I'd choose drapery in Mokum Handloom colour Silk, manufactured with a modern wave heading. Handloom is an incredible textile, handwoven in India it is a nod to my early days with Mokum when the majority of our range was hand loomed fabrics from southern India. To me, this fabric is the perfect balance of nostalgia and modernism.
 
Last, but certainly not least, I’m dreaming of a new Carmen MKII chair from Arthur G upholstered in Alpaca Velvet colour Blush. I love that this would bring a hint of feminine design via colour and tactility from the dimensional wool velvet pile plus tonally it would link with the Eternal Rose Quartz scatter cushions.
