Simple tips for a stylish kid’s bedroom

The world is your oyster when it comes to decorating children’s bedrooms

As a child, there is nothing more exciting than to have all of your favourite things displayed in your room – whether that be soft toys lined up on the bed, brightly patterned bedding and cushions, stacks of your favourite books, knick-knacks and trinkets galore, or pictures of unicorns, dragons, and your heroes posted across the wall.

What children love from a décor point of view and what parents might like can be quite different. To manage some of this less desirable décor, ensure you start with a design plan in mind and talk it over with your child to ensure the room will look cohesive and considered – and ultimately be enjoyed and loved by them.

Choose a theme

  • Whether it’s unicorns or dinosaurs, choose a theme to begin with so that you can work around this in terms of a colour palette or details that might reflect the child’s favourite things. Unicorns signify magic and rainbows, soft textures and dreamy shades of colour whilst a dinosaur theme provides the opportunity to create texture in the space with greens, greys, and neutral elements.
  • Having your child choose a special image of their favourite thing, framing it and hanging it on the wall is another great way to include your child requests but in a way that is considered.

Colour their world

  • Playing with colour in a child’s room can create real excitement. Children are only young once and paint is easy to update! If your child wants bright pink and you aren’t keen, perhaps agree on a more subtle shade such as a dusky pink.
  • Primary colours are always a challenge so if you can tone these colours down you should be able to create a space that is harmonious and that you can complement with other hues.
  • Create a feature wall whether that be with paint or wallpaper.

Don’t forget the bedding

  • Beds are another fantastic opportunity to get creative, there are so many brilliant linen and duvet options at different price points so don’t be afraid to have fun here by mixing and matching sheets and pillow slips.
  • Add cosy blankets and throws in complementary colours - find old vintage blankets and layer them up on the end of the bed.
  • Top off the bed with fun cushions that can match your theme - you can find cushions shaped as lions, unicorns, stars or sharks, there really is something for every little person’s taste.
  • Headboards can also make a statement - find a gorgeous pre-loved vintage piece or upholster one yourself with some ply, foam and fabric.

Storage

If there had to be one major component of a child’s bedroom, it is storage. How do they accumulate so much stuff? The easiest way to manage this is with plenty of options.

  • A chest of drawers is obviously needed for clothing, but can double as a great way to contain other items.
  • Baskets, they are truly the way to go. Available in many sizes they are cost effective, look good, and strong enough to contain various shaped toys.
  • Storage bags - these are popular and double as laundry hampers. Normally made of fabric they come in patterns and colours to suit your décor.
  • Plastic boxes are perfect for storing Lego and smaller objects or arts and crafts as the box has a fitted and lockable lid (i.e. Sistema). Plastic boxes are not to everyone’s taste so these could be an option for those who have wardrobe or large storage spaces in their home.

Liven up the walls

  • Create a feature wall, whether that be with vibrant paint or a unique wallpaper - there are so many amazing options to choose from.
  • Hang up your children’s masterpieces, either frame them or pop them up with washi tape for an easily interchangeable look.
  • Garlands, flags, and floral headpieces are another idea for giving a room some personality.
  • Hang a plant in a cute planter for a touch of nature.
  • Sticker decals come in all shapes, styles, and sizes. From forests to sea creatures, you can get really imaginative here.
