Featherston revisited

A classic collection of iconic designs by furniture designer Grant Featherston has been relaunched to inspire a new generation of design enthusiasts. Manufactured in Melbourne and revitalised with new contemporary fabrics, including some of our own, we love the results.

Australian designer Grant Featherston has been hugely influential in the creative industry since his earliest furniture designs were released in 1947. A self-taught designer in lighting, glass and furniture, he truly made a mark on the design world with his unique style accentuating lightness of form and simplicity.

The 2016 launch is a re-issued collection comprising of seventeen iconic pieces, ten of which have been out of production since the 1970s. While all the designs are still true to the originals, we now see these classics revitalized in contemporary, yet timeless fabrics and colours, ensuring the pieces work in today’s interiors.

Featherston 2016 is a collaboration from Gordon Mather Industries, Grazia & Co, and Mary Featherston (Grant’s wife and creative collaborator).

We are so excited to have our fabrics featuring in this relaunch.

The Elastic Suspension Chair in Coupole by Mokum and the Contour Armchair is upholstered in two variations; Hemisphere by Hemptech which creates a textural organic aesthetic, and Velluti by James Dunlop in a bold copper tone creating a true statement piece.

What we truly love about the Featherston designs, beyond the gorgeous style and aesthetic, is the method and principle behind the furniture design process. Grant Featherston’s design philosophy honed in on a sustainable focus and efficiency of materials and form – this is apparent when comparing his style to that of the competition in the mid-1900s.

Speaking before the launch event at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA), Mary Featherston said she was overwhelmed by the interest and excitement ahead of the collection’s launch, saying “The task of updating Grant’s original furniture whilst maintaining the integrity of his vision has required great sensitivity and style. It has been wonderful to work with Gordon and Grazia who have demonstrated these characteristics in every aspect of this collection”.

Manufactured by Gordon Mather Industries, the Featherston 2016 collection is available through Grazia & Co.
