Understanding OEKO-TEX®

Controlling the use of chemicals in textile production

At James Dunlop Textiles we strive to place consumer safety and environmental responsibility at the heart of our business, ensuring peace of mind for both the client and the end user, and we are proud to work with mills who are share our enthusiasm for this goal.

WHAT IS OEKO-TEX?

OEKO-TEX® is an environmental certification system that assesses the entire textile production process. Proving through vigorous testing that fabrics are free from harmful levels of more than 100 substances known to be detrimental to human health. The criteria for certification is updated at least once a year and expanded in response to evolving scientific knowledge or statutory requirements.

Products are divided into one of four classes: for us, it’s Product Class 4. Class 4 encompasses decoration materials and all articles, including initial products and accessories, used for furnishing purposes (i.e., tablecloths, curtains, upholstery fabrics, etc.).

Confidence in Textiles

The Standard 100 OEKO-TEX® Confidence in Textiles label is used to distinguish products which feature the advantages of modern textiles without posing health risks to the consumer.

Customised testing assesses the materials, agents, and dyestuffs used in production to ensure products are colourfast, free of allergenic materials, free of harmful substances, and will not emit VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds) into the air or during washing.

It’s important to note that the greater the amount of textile-to-skin contact during use, the more stringent the testing. For example, children’s toys, clothing, and soft furnishings are tested to a higher level of scrutiny.

OEKO-TEX® STeP

An extension of the OEKO-TEX® certification is OEKO-TEX® STeP, which sets the highest standards for the social and environmental aspects of textile production. Signifying a responsibility for employees and the environment, this certification supports a company’s journey towards more sustainable production.

It’s not easy for manufacturers and customers to keep abreast of ever-evolving knowledge of harmful substances; the experts from the OEKO-TEX® Institute can do this for you, so you can be sure that you are making safe and environmentally friendly choices in your interior design projects.
